Who does the machine quilting at the Quilting Hideaway?
Kathi is in charge of the quilting process.
Her
husband, Mike, is in charge of the maintenance of the equipment. We just love our Gammill
quilting machine that is guided by the computerized Statler
Precision Stitcher because the quilting is so precise and it has so few
problems. We can also create our own quilting designs!

Where is Quilting Hideaway?
Quilting Hideaway is located in our home, which is
located near Carlton, MN. We are just 25 minutes south of downtown Duluth,
MN. Whether you live nearby, or just visiting in this beautiful scenic area, call for an appointment to stop in and
see us.
What is edge-to-edge quilting?
Edge-to-edge quilting is a quilting design that covers the entire quilt,
regardless of quilt pattern, borders or sashings. The pattern is
repeated several times throughout each row. This type of quilting is
excellent for quilts that will be loved and used.

If my quilt has fullness, will it quilt out?
That depends somewhat on the quilting design that you choose.
Fullness in a quilt top is best "disguised" by selecting a
design that meanders over the whole quilt without crossing over itself,
and also using a higher loft batting.

How is my quilt attached to the quilting machine?
The backing for your quilt will have a zipper
attached to the head and foot ends and will be zipped onto the quilting
machine. The quilt top is attached to a zippered leader at the foot
end, and basted to a leader at the head end.
Please stay stitch a scant quarter-inch around the
outer edge of your quilt top to prevent seams from coming
unstitched.
What batting is recommended?
Batting is your personal preference, but for infant and children quilts we
suggest 100 % cotton batting. We currently carry Hobbs Blend (80% cotton, 20% poly),
Hobbs PolyDown Plus (100% poly), and Warm & Natural (100% cotton). Cotton battings "breathe" and are
somewhat heavier, while polyester batting is lighter weight and tend to
be warmer because it does not "breathe" like cotton.

What if I have my own batting?
You are welcome to provide your own batting, but avoid battings with
scrim, as they tend to "beard. We also request that you not
send "unbonded" battings since they are too fragile to go on a quilting machine.

What about binding on my quilt?
If you would like me to bind your quilt, you
must provide adequate binding ready to be applied to the quilt. I will machine stitch it to the top first and then hand stitch
it to the back.

What about shipping my quilt?
I ship using Priority Mail through the US
Postal Service. The cost is variable depending upon your zip code and the
weight of your parcel. The rate we charge includes $200 insurance. If
you'd like an estimate for your quilt top, give Kathi a call at (218)
384-4634 or send Kathi and e-mail with the quilt dimensions and what you would like
done with it..

What type of payment is accepted?
Payments can be made through PayPal,
or with a personal check, money order, or bank draft written to Quilting
Hideaway. When I receive your quilt I will send you an e-mail invoice with
the actual cost. Included in the e-mail will
be a link that will let you make your payment by credit card though PayPal's secure internet site. If you
choose not to use Paypal, please
contact us to make other arrangements.

How do I contact Quilting Hideaway?
Mailing address: Quilting Hideaway
1474 Halvorson Road
Carlton, MN 55718
Phone: (218) 384-4634
E-mail:
quilts@lakenet.com
If I am busy quilting when you call, please
leave a message so that I can return your call.

What is the largest size quilt that can fit on the
machine?
The width of the quilt can't exceed 144 inches,
and the length of the quilt
does not matter as it will be wound on the rollers of the machine.

What does the quilting charge include?
The quilting charge includes the actual machine quilting only.

How much backing and batting should I provide?
If you provide your own backing or batting, it must be 6-8
inches larger than the quilt top measurements. This allows for
a gentle pull on the quilt top which enables the quilt to lie as flat as
possible during the quilting process. It is better to have too
much backing & batting than not enough. Please have your backing
"squared". This means the head and foot measurements are the same as well
as both sides the same length. Also, avoid
selvages in your quilt top and backing as they cause puckering during the quilting process.

What region does Quilting Hideaway service?
Currently, Quilting Hideaway services customers in the United States of
America. We will also ship to military FPO, APO addresses, but insurance
covers only within the United States.
